I'm feeling particularly inspired by the sea at the moment. It's mid-October 2024. As the season changes, the character of the sea seems to shift even more swiftly than usual. Sometimes from one minute to the next. I sat on the shingle the same morning I took this photo, and wrote a short blog post. As you read this post, inspired by that bright and breezy morning walk, what resonates with you? Consider what is on your own horizon line
When I saw this view on my morning walk, a question popped into my head
“How many miles is it to the horizon?”
I don't know if that even makes sense to ask
Is it always the same, wherever you are in the world?
Perhaps it is, assuming there is nothing there to impede the line of sight
No clouds or fog. No land masses between you and that hard scored line where sea meets sky
I often see objects in the distance. Small sails, or huge container ships dwarfed by distance
They seem to be perched right on the horizon and moving in slow motion, like children's toys pulled by strings along a tabletop
But, in reality, if I were to swim out towards them, I would discover a whole new expanse of sea for swimming in
A beautiful new horizon line, always receding
Those ships, too, have their own destination, their own horizon line that re-presents itself with every mile they travel
So, what does it mean to swim towards the horizon line?
It means to fix my eye on a new destination with every stroke
To recognise that the seas are always shifting
And to find the joy in the journey

Here are five questions to consider, as you contemplate what is on your horizon
❓ What destination do you wish to reach?
❓ How far away might it be, and how long might it take you to travel there?
❓ Are the conditions fair for swimming?
❓ What obstacles might impede your line of sight, and how can they be circumnavigated?
❓ And, importantly, how can you find the joy on your journey?
